What is your favourite drink?
Being born to a French father and a West Indian mother, it is obvious that I was born with bon vivant genes between my French culture and my Caribbean culture. I might as well tell you that rum is my favorite drink.
Drinking rum in my family is a real tradition and a real ritual. In Martinique, the island where my mother’s family is from, they produce one of the best rums in the world. But they also have lots of specialty rum cocktails like the planter, a cocktail that my mom prepares to perfection.
She does it with such love that when you drink it you feel the intoxicating magic of smells and spices, fruits and of course rum rising within you. The best way to enjoy this cocktail is to serve it very cold, before a meal or at the end of the afternoon after a good nap on the beach in a hammock.
Here’s how to prepare this famous recipe, I hope you enjoy it as much as I do!!
Ingredients for 4 liters of cocktail, or 20 glasses, or approximately 10 people:
1 liter of guava juice
1 liter of pineapple juice
1 liter of mango or passion fruit juice
75 cl of white rum
25 cl of amber rum
1 lime
2 tbsp of grenadine syrup
1 knife tip of powdered cinnamon
1 knife tip of vanilla powder
1 knife tip of nutmeg (optional)
10 drops of Angostura (optional)
Wash the lime, grate its zest and squeeze it to collect the juice and put them in a large salad bowl.
Add the spices and syrup and mix well.
Add the rums and juices.
Mix all the ingredients in the planter and refrigerate until ready to serve.
Serve very cold with possibly a few ice cubes if it is hot.
Enjoy your drink!!
