How covid and the pandemic period had an impact on my life. Back at the end of 2019 and beginning of 2020, I was at a period in my life where I didn’t ask myself any questions, life was going well.
Suddenly everything stopped as if we had gone back years or even centuries. I remember one evening when I was out with friends, and the TV showed huge queues of people shopping in the stores for groceries, at the time we knew very little things about the covid virus.
People even wore diving masks to protect themselves and go shopping, some even looked like minion characters like in the cartoon.
My friends and I watched this in shock and bewilderment, while we were having a drink. After that we decided to go out to a nightclub, the club was almost empty we were almost the only ones dancing on the dance floor.
What we didn’t know was that this was going to be our last outing for two long years. Subsequently I invited my parents to come to Singapore for the holidays knowing that it was probably the one and only chance I would have to see them for the next two years that were preparing to come.
When my parents left, the borders closed in Singapore, a good number of families found themselves suddenly separated without being able to return or leave. Afterwards we had our first confinement, it was very hard but strangely, I found that it made sense, and that we were able to rediscover the fundamentals of our society, people started to be more tolerant towards the others because yes we had to help each other, we were happy when we were allowed to go out and just walk in a garden.
The big work companies adapted, they understood that it was not necessary to work in an office all the time, and began to introduce working from home. Of course there was a lot of damage, and a good number of businesses had to close due to excessively expensive rent, particularly restaurants, but some managed to adapt by doing take-out catering.
Many people took the opportunity to reinvent themselves by changing careers, which was also the case for me and I took the opportunity to resume my studies.
In conclusion I think that the covid pandemic has had a devastating effect in particular on the planet’s economy and of course health, but it has taught us to have much more resilience, and to refocus on the main values of our society .
